What Is The Fear Of Flying?

I reached a point in my life where I needed to travel for both personal and professional reasons. My family lived out of state, and I found that I did not have the endurance, time or money to drive to visit them – especially considering that the drive time to their home was over eighteen hours.

I also received a promotion at work that required me to travel and assist in training employees to perform certain tasks within the company. I was at a point where I could no longer simply stand by and accept my fear of being in the air.

I knew I had to start somewhere. So, I started researching information on the fear of flying. I discovered that the official name for my fear was “Pteromerhanophobia”. Yes, I know – that’s a mouthful. Basically, it means that a person has a fear of being in vehicles that fly while they are in the air.

There are many other names for the fear, as well. The most popular are “Aerophobia”, “Aviatophobia” and “Aviophobia”. If you want to overcome fear of flying, it is important to learn as much as you can about your fear and why it exists. This is actually the first steps in facing your fears – learning about them. I learned that the actual apprehension of flying may be a distinctive phobia.

I also learned that it may be a combination of various phobias. For example, a person may be fearful of flight because they are scared of heights or are scared of closed spaces. I also discovered that the fear that I had was not a disease or a medical condition. Rather, it was a symptom.

I learned that when I experienced the fear, it was a type of anxiety. It was this anxiety that prevented me from traveling by air to visit my loved ones and this anxiety that could have impacted by career in a negative manner. I also learned that many experience the fear of flying at such extreme levels that even seeing or talking about a vehicle that travels by air may result in the onset of panic attacks, nausea and vomiting.

I researched many online documents and websites from medical professionals that focus on various types of fears that individuals – just like you and me – experience. According to the information I reviewed, I discovered that my fear could have been created by other types of fears and basic phobias.

The following represents the main points brought up when I researched the most common causes associated with the fear of flight that I feel you should be aware of to overcome fear of flying:

  • Many individuals are apprehensive about flying because they have a fear that the air vessel will plummet to the Earth, crash and result in their death, the death of loved ones, or the death of people in general.
  • Many experience issues with flying because they are concerned that one or more individuals may hijack the aircraft or that acts of terrorism will be associated with the flight that they choose to take to their destination.
  • Many people suffer from a fear of closed in spaces – which is called “Claustrophobia” – and, as a result, are not comfortable being inside of an aircraft because of the space limitations.
  • The fear of heights, or “Acrophobia”, may result in the development of a fear associated with flying.
  • It is common for those who enjoy remaining in control to feel a fear that relates to flying because the act is one which they lack control over.
  • Many individuals have physiological or psychological conditions that may result in a sudden onset of symptoms once they are in flight. Examples of these conditions include motion sickness, panic attacks and seizure disorders. They may become frightened of being in the air and suffering from the symptoms and embarrassment of suffering from the symptoms of their condition.
  • Many people experience trepidation related to flight because of the fact that they are frightened by turbulence. This is a state where substances in the sky result in instantaneous velocities that result in an aircraft experiencing fluctuations that are considered to be random and highly irregular.

There are many other reasons why you may become frightened about flying. For example, if you have ever experienced a traumatic event as a result of being in or around and aircraft, you may develop a phobia.

In some instances, individuals are never able to accurately pinpoint exactly why they are scared to fly. However, it is in your best interests to at least make an attempt at uncovering why you experience this type of anxiety. By doing so, you will be successful in learning how to overcome fear of flying.

Facing Your Fears

In order to overcome fear of flying, you should face the fear. Before doing that, though, there are some steps that you need to take. These steps will permit you to experience higher levels of comfort when faced with a flight. In order to win the war against your fear, do the following: You should make a point to learn what to expect while at the airport and on the flight that you choose to take to your destination. You may need to make a trip to the airport prior to your take off date.

This will allow you to see and understand how things work at the facility. It will also provide you with the opportunity to see the aircrafts that are at the facility up close and personal. This will assist in becoming familiar with the sights, the sounds and the general process of flying.

The next step to take when learning how to overcome fear of flying is to study the safety statistics of flying. If you want to overcome fear, consider the facts behind flight. It has been established that we are all up to 1000 more times likely to experience an accident in a vehicle that uses highways and roadways than we are to experience an accident associated with air vehicles. According to statistics, there are approximately 36.6 events that are considered to be fatal out of every sixteen million flights.

While this figure may seem overwhelming to many, it indicates that there are very few accidents that result in the deaths of passengers on board major airlines. By knowing the chances of complications are slim, you will be more comfortable when facing your fears of the air.

The next step when learning how to overcome fear of flying is to actually book a flight to take. I know I hesitated and hesitated to book my first flight. However, I knew that it was a step that needed to be taken. I knew that it was a way to force myself out of the fear that I suffered from and was a way to hold myself accountable. I even went as far as to order a non-refundable ticket so that I would not back out of the flight.

When learning how to overcome the fear of flying, you should take the next steps in order to experience success. Once I got on the aircraft for the first time, I found a flight attendant that was exceptionally calm, friendly and sensitive to my needs. While my ticket was for a seat towards the back of the aircraft, the airline had a cancellation that opened up a seat in the front of the vessel.

She suggested that I sit in the front because I would be able to see the crew, and the first experiences the least amount of movement during turbulence. I gladly accepted. If you are nervous, be sure to make arrangements to have a front seat and also to inform the crew that you are scared. They will ensure that you are taken care of and will provide a high level of comfort to you while on the flight. This step is very important when learning how to overcome fear of flying.

If you are attempting to overcome fear of flying, you should always ensure that you take something that will distract you from the thoughts associated with the fear. You may take a laptop, a Kindle, a PDA, a portable game system, a portable DVD player, a small CD player or a MP3 player. There are other items that you may take as well such as a book or a newspaper.

The point behind this step is to bring an item that will keep your mind busy and will not leave you the opportunity to focus on the anxiety that you have in regards to flying.
