How To Overcome Fear

Before you can achieve anything, you must first learn how to overcome fear. President Franklin D Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States said:

“So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself -- nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.

No one ever spoke truer words. While Roosevelt was talking about the fear of hunger, job loss and loss of money during the Great Depression, that same quotation could hold true for any individual and any facet of life.

Fear of failure often stops people from trying. Fear of commitment keeps people lonely. Fear of appearing foolish actually makes people look the fool. The real question is how to overcome fear and make it work for you rather than against you.

How To Overcome Fear
With Self-Confidence

You can learn how to conquer fear if you build self confidence. Self-confidence develops after you’ve had several successes. While that sounds ironic, it’s true. It’s like looking for your first job in a field when every job ad notes they want someone with experience. It makes you wonder how you’ll ever get experience without a job to get experience. The same is true of self confidence. How do you achieve it if you don’t possess it already or have confidence building experiences?

In this case, you must learn what makes you afraid and then forge ahead. Most people fear things that will never happen. Their fear paralyzes them. You can cope with the biggest fears if you understand techniques to visualize your fears and make them disappear. Of course, many times programs, which teach you how to defeat fear and build self confidence take long hours to practice and rehearse. Frequently people caught in the middle of a fearful situation don’t have months to learn these lessons or the time.

Overcome Fear Faster

Fear is nothing more than how you think about something. While fearing for your life if bullets are flying past your head makes sense, because there’s a real danger, fearing you’ll make a mistake and embarrass yourself is counterproductive. The more you linger on the possibility of making a mistake, the more you increase the potential you’ll make that mistake and many others.

Gandhi quote

That’s because you’ve trained your mind to believe the fear is real. Your mind does everything possible to get the outcome you believe and your fear becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure. In order to turn around years of negative programming, you could do affirmations, creative visualization, practice self-confidence phrases or take an easier route.

You can use self-hypnosis to get directly to your subconscious and change the way you think about a task or situation. While self-hypnosis isn’t the total answer, it’s one method to help you relax and mellow out the “belly-wrenching” fear we’ve all felt at one time or another. Relaxation and looking at the monster we fear goes a long way in helping us learn how to overcome fear. Once you conquer it, you’ll find it helps build self confidence.

Face The Fear

If you want to learn how to defeat fear, you must face the fear. For those worried about their health, seeing a doctor is the wisest way to face the fear. If the doctor finds nothing is wrong, you can relax and enjoy life again. If you’re worried about an important presentation, face your fear and practice the presentation in front of a friend.

Once you’ve overcome the initial stage fright in front of a friendly face, you’ll find it far easier to present your material in front of strangers or customers. The more you face your fears, the faster they shrink away to nothing. Beginning the process isn’t easy and it starts like any other journey, with the first step. As you learn how to vanish fear, you be amazed at how it helps build self confidence. One day, you’re shaking in your boots but before too long, you’ll look back and wonder why you made all the fuss.

Don’t Procrastinate, Start Today

Procrastination is just a form of fear. While you’re stomach may not churn, something stops you from beginning tasks and putting your life on the right path. Learning how to overcome fear should begin today, as soon as you finish this article.

Think of a task you dread and begin it. If it seems overwhelming, use aids such as self-hypnosis or other positive reinforcements to help you take the first step. You can learn how to overcome fear and build self confidence by simply taking that first step.
